TADMOR,   1934 - 1961, compiled - 2011

During the summer of 2010 our family held a reunion at Whispering Winds Bible Camp. My family knew this place as Tadmor and were residents beginning in 1937. Photographs of our gathering were shared with a few friends who also had a history with the property. This prompted an exchange of  memories, sketches, photographs and testament to their Tadmor experience and is the basis for this compilation.
Beth Provinse and John Snarrenberg provided numerous photographs that represent the early days.
Three ladies have been instrumental in validating a majority of the early history. They are:

Dorothy Clark    12-8-1914  to  3-24-2012
(resided in Florida at the SIM retirement village)

Dorothy had a long association with Tadmor. She was a visitor, co-director, a counsellor, a lifeguard and director. She served God 33 years in Africa. She was the oldest member of the Tadmor support group.

DOROTHY CLARK
Dorothy "Dotty" Lois Clark, 97, of Sebring, Fla., passed away Saturday, March 24, 2012 in Sebring. She was born Dec. 8, 1914, to Edward P. and Florence Daisy (Moore) Clark in St. Louis, Mo., and had been a resident of Sebring since 1985, coming from St. Louis. She was a missionary with SIM, joining in 1945 and retiring in 1979. She taught elementary school and Bible schools during her career in Southern Nigeria. She was an associate member of Bible Fellowship Church in Sebring.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Pinecrest Cemetery in Sebring. A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. that afternoon in the SIM Chapel in Sebring, with Dr. Eugene Bengtson officiating. Memorial donations may be made to SIM Egbe, 4114 Nigeria Road, Sebring, FL 33875.

Bernadine Bailey Mellow - born  6-29-1921 (resides in Texas)

Bernadine has the distinction of having resided at Tadmor during three separate periods. She was a student of the "Self Help Bible School", later a housewife (1944 - 45, Mrs Paul Mellow), and again later she was in charge of the kitchen during those years that her husband was the camp director (1949 - 1953).

and Alberta Thorpe - m. 1955 (resides in Illinois)

Alberta Thorpe resided with her husband, Larry, at Tadmor from 1955 through 1961. They managed the farm at the time. Their daughter, Sandra, was born during this period. Larry was born at Tadmor in 1936 while his father was the farm manager.

In compiling this information, I realized how little I knew about this place of my birth (1938). I knew the creek and river, the big house and the barns, the horses and the farmhands, but never saw how God prepared His Servants down through the decades to fulfill His plan for this property. Today the "objective" of Bible Impact Ministries (Whispering Winds Bible Camp) reflects the same directive given by the properties benefactor, Mr Hugo Wurdack. It continues to be used for "Christian ministry" today as stated on the website of :
Bible Impact Ministries

on their website:   "What we teach"

"THE WORD OF GOD"
No other document, book, or training manual will accomplish what God’s Word will.

"The BIBLE"
convicts us of sin (2 Tim 3:16),                   keeps us from sin (Ps 119:11),

cleanses our lives(John 15:3),             and provides directions for our lives (Ps 32:8).

on their facebook page:   "About"

Bible Impact Ministries exists to glorify God by presenting Christ through the
Word of God to call people to salvation, spiritual growth, service, and leadership.
Whispering Winds Bible Camp fulfills this mission through Bible-centered camping.

Initial residents and activity at Tadmor.

George & Edith Palm

" Some time or other, maybe as early as 1933, my sister and her husband, Edith and George Palm, spent a few years at Tadmor -- when Mr & Mrs Kammerer were there. Several times before and during that time I rode to Tadmor with Mr & Mrs J B Thornton, our pastor and his wife -- a great pleasure whenever I could be with them."

Bob & Hulda Thorpe, early residents, if not the first, at Tadmor.

"In  April 1935, Kenny, a son of Bob & Hulda died while they lived at Tadmor and is buried in the cemetery there. They were living there in February 1936 when Larry was born. I do not know how long before and after that period they lived there.

Frank Robinson "Bob" Thorpe, b. 11-11-1907, married Hulda Armstrong, 5-2-1931

The farm just east of Tadmor that Bob & Hulda lived on during 1955 was called Evergreen Acres. It was owned by Dr. Henry Bramlette. He was a Canadian and a friend of Herb & Laura Miller. Hulda cooked at Wesco school, Camp Tadmor and at Mound Ridge Camp during their years in Missouri."

Note on the Kammerers at Tadmor.

"I've had another thought about a man name Kammerer. He had something to do with the camp perhaps before your folks moved there or early on in their time. He was a Pastor and lived in Salem. Paul and I went to visit him one time. I had the idea that perhaps he lived at Tadmor prior to your folks (1937).
Perhaps he had something to do with the Bible lessons ministry in the schools, which Watson and Paul participated in."

Our desire is to establish the history of the property for the years 1934 - 1961 and, as such, will be an account of the properties use to the point of ownership by the Rural Bible Crusade .  We trust that in time this collection will be organized and published in such a manner that future generations will know how God has used this Ozark property in preparing young people for life, the ministry and for missionary service. Please add your memories of Tadmor to this collection.
